Out of Hours related IT use
Call Handling
A psion series 5 palmtop computer is used to take the initial caller
information - phone number, name, date of birth, address (and directions
if appropriate).  Details of the reason for the call are also logged
and the telephone triage program is used to help assess the urgency of
the call.  Date and time of call are automatically logged by the computer.
Visit Data
If it is necessary to see the patient then the time of arrival is logged
automatically at the press of a button.  Notes can then be made under
the headings of history, examination, impression, advice and/or treatment
given and the plans for review.

Referral Letters
If hospital admission is required then the computer can create a referral
letter by combining a copy of the practice letterhead with the details
already entered.  This letter can be printed out at the practice (or
any infrared compliant printer, such as the HP Laserjet 5 favored by the
Scottish Office systems), or it can be faxed via the mobile phone or by
land line modem.
Faxed Referral Letters
If the letter is faxed the computer will automatically remove the name
and address from the letter, adds a medical confidentiality notice and
places my signature at the bottom of the letter.  Once the letter
has been faxed the computer replaces the name and address and removes the
confidentiality notice and signature ready for two copies of the letter
to be printed out back at the practice.  One copy can then be filed
in the notes and the other sent to the hospital if required.
