Terms and Conditions for Locum Bookings

  1. Services provided:
    Face-to-face consultations:
    Telephone consultations/triage:
    Home visits:
    Repeat prescribing*
    Results/paperwork*

Practices should be aware that home visitation of unknown patients in unfamiliar environments presents significant problems for locums, has an associated increased medico-legal risk, and will take longer than when performed by a doctor familiar with the patient. We therefore discourage routine home visiting by locum doctors.

*Where these services are provided, access to the clinical notes for each result/prescription dealt with will be required. Practices should be aware that these services carry a higher medico-legal risk, and will take longer to carry out than when performed by a doctor who knows the patient. This complies with MDU medico-legal advice regarding locums and repeat prescribing/results management.

  2. Where accommodation is provided by the practice/PCT/Health Board, it should be self-catering family accommodation with two bedrooms and a telephone line installed.
Where accommodation is required for on call work, please ask the proprietor to have call divert and caller display set up on the line to prevent calls being missed.
There are surcharges for accommodation that does not have a telephone line, or does not meet our minimum requirements, . Further details .
  3. Surgeries should have a minimum of 10 minute appointments with one 10 minute catch-up slot per hour (ie: a maximum of 5 patients per hour). Extra patients will incur a surcharge of 1/5th of the standard hourly rate. Please allow 30 minutes at the end of each surgery for paperwork.
  4. For medico-legal reasons, intimate examinations of patients by locums will only be carried out with the assistance of a qualified nurse chaperone. It is the responsibility of the unit booking cover to ensure an appropriate chaperone is available at reasonable notice.
  5. ‘Reduced 24hr rate’ for small practices provides a maximum of 4 hours per day of routine clinical work between 8.30am and 6.30pm (surgeries, visits, and paperwork) Monday to Friday. If the average daily workload exceeds this, or there are surgeries out with these hours, a surcharge will apply (standard hourly rate, per hour).
  6. Quoted locum rates cover NHS work only. Any private work agreed and carried out during this period will be charged for separately at £180.00 per hour.
  7. Locum cover is provided on a ‘like for like’ basis (ie: that the locum will be performing, at most, the duties of a single doctor). Should the workload be greater than that performed by a single doctor at the practice/unit under normal circumstances, then a surcharge will apply.
  8. Quoted rates are the minimum fee that will apply for the locum cover agreed. Any additional work required will be billed at the standard rate.
  9. Payment is due at the end of each locum period, or at the end of each week, whichever is shorter. There is a 10% surcharge for invoices that are unpaid 14 days after the date of the invoice.
  10. Confirmed locum bookings are subject to a 100% cancellation fee if cancelled by the trust/GP practice less than 2 months from the start date of cover.
  11. Every effort will be made to provide the cover specified, or alternative cover. However we reserve the right to terminate locum cover in exceptional circumstances, or if the above terms and conditions are breached.
