All patient entries can now be printed in the patient's notes

One problem with using a locum is trying to decipher their writing after they have left.  A succession of locums can leave the notes almost impenetrable.  Legibility is especially important for locums, because you need to follow up patients they have seen and they will not be about to decipher what they wrote.

One solution is to find a locum who has neat, legible handwriting.  Unfortunately I don't fall into that category, so to provide a clear record of my patient contacts I type my entries.  For the last couple of years out of hours calls have been recorded on palmtop computer and printed out back at the practice on a portable printer.

Due to the success of this approach to out of hours calls, I have extended it to all patient contact.  I am now able to type an entry in the surgery for each patient I see and print it directly onto the pink GP111F form in the notes.  The entry will appear below the last written entry and like out of hours entries will be automatically time and date stamped with my name. ;
